An implant is widely preferred as an alternative for dentures. It's a titanium screw that replaces the basis of a tooth when it falls. A bit like a root, it's placed into the jawbone.

Are implants safe, and the way long will they last?

Implants are a secure, well-established treatment. It's probably wise to say that implants are similar to natural teeth and will last for as long as you take care of them.

How well can you care for your dental implants?

If you do not take proper care of your implants, they're going to develop a coating which can also harm your natural teeth. Left untreated, this can cause gum infection, bleeding, soreness, and general discomfort.

If your implants are taken care of properly, and if the bone they're fitted to is robust and healthy, you can expect them to last for several years. However, even as with other surgical implants, there's no lifetime guarantee.

I have all my permanent teeth, am I able to still have implants?

Yes, you can replace all your teeth with implants, from one single tooth to an entire set.

Do implants hurt?

Placing an implant is typically more comfortable than extracting a single tooth and is usually done using a simple local anaesthetic. You may not feel any pain at the time but, a bit like after an extraction, you may feel some trouble during the week after the surgery.

Sometimes the dentist might offer you a sedative if you're very nervous or if the case may be a complicated one. General anaesthetics are rarely used for dental implants and are commonly only used for very complicated cases.

How long does the treatment take?

Your dental team may offer you an estimation of the treatment timetable beforehand.

Some dentures can now even be fitted at an equivalent time because the implants (these are called 'immediate implants'). Consult your dental team to ascertain whether these are suitable for you. Usually, the denture is fitted 3 to 4 months after the dental implants are put in. Sometimes treatment takes longer time, so your dentist will ask you about your treatment time.

What happens next?

Your dental team will give you instructions on how to take care of your implant. They will provide you with some painkillers after the surgery - or confirm you've got some reception - to require over the subsequent few days if you would like them.

After your implants are placed, the bone in your jaw must grow onto them and fuse them. This usually takes a couple of months. Sometimes the implants could also be stable enough once they are placed for the denture to be fitted before this.

Are the implant teeth difficult to clean?

No. But aftercare is essential if you're getting to have a long-lasting, successful implant. Your dental team should offer you detailed advice on the way to take care of your implants. Brushing around the teeth connected to the dental implants is not any harder than cleaning natural teeth. However, there could also be areas that are difficult to succeed in, and you will be shown the way to clean them. You'll get to visit your hygienist more often, but your dental team is going to be ready to ask you about this.
